The French Interfedral Committee (CFI) established the Coupe de France in 1917, making the tournament older than the French Football Federation, which governs the sport in France today.

The very first Coupe de France was won by Olympique de Pantin as they beat FC Lyon 3-0. Over the years, the final has taken place at many different grounds across the country, but today, it’s always held at the Stade de France.
Over the years, the Cope de France has become known for the impressive performances from amateur clubs. One of the most famous examples was in the 1999-2000 competition when Calais RUFC reached the final, knocking out clubs like Lille and Bordeaux before losing 2-1 to Nantes.
Format & Schedule of the Coupe de France
The Coupe de France follows a standard knockout competition format, with matches for each round determined by a random draw. There are a total of 14 rounds, although early rounds are regional and professional clubs don’t enter until the 7th round.
The opening 2 rounds contain teams from district and regional leagues.
The 3rd round sees teams from National 3 enter.
At the 4th round, National 2 teams enter the competition.
National teams enter the 5th round of the cup.
Ligue 2 teams enter the tournament from the 7th round.
Ligue 1 teams enter at the round of 64 stage.
If a game isn’t decided in 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time is played. A penalty shootout is used to determine a winner if the scores are still level after extra time.
